How to Calculate Your Soul Urge/Heart’s Desire Number

1. Enter your first name, all middle names together in the optional middle-name field, and your last name, as given at birth.
2. Keep the vowels A, E, I, O and U, plus any Y classified as a vowel by the rules below.
3. Convert those letters using the Pythagorean values: A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3, Y = 7.
4. Add and reduce the values in each of the three input fields separately. Stop at a single digit or a master number: 11, 22 or 33.
5. Add the reduced field totals, then reduce again with the same master-number rule.

An empty middle-name field contributes zero. Multiple middle names are combined in that field before reduction. See the full numerology letter chart for the other letters.

Worked example: John Rayan

The Soul Urge number is 8. The Y in Rayan follows a vowel, so this calculator treats it as a consonant. Counting all the letters would instead calculate the Expression number, which is 7 for this name.

When does Y count as a vowel?

Our tool uses spelling-based rules. A Y at the start of a word counts as a vowel when followed by a consonant, as in Yvonne. At the end, it counts when preceded by a consonant, as in Barry. Inside a word, it counts when the preceding letter is a consonant, as in Kyle. Other Ys are treated as consonants.

Which name should I use after marriage or a name change?

Use your full birth name for this calculation. Entering a current name or nickname produces a reading for that spelling, which can differ from the birth-name result. Leave the middle-name field empty if you have no middle name.

Can I calculate my Soul Urge number from my birthday?

This calculator uses the vowels in your birth name. The term “soul number” is used for different calculations, so check which inputs a tool asks for. A result based on a birthday is not the same calculation as the Soul Urge number shown here. For a reading based on your full birth date, use the Life Path calculator.

How are accents, punctuation and non-Latin names handled?

Accents are normalized, so José is counted like Jose. Supported letters such as ß and æ are expanded to ss and ae. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes add no numeric value; they also separate words for the Y rules. Use a consistent Latin-letter spelling for names written in another script.

Why is my result zero?

Zero means the entered name has no letters counted as vowels under these rules. It is not a Soul Urge interpretation. Check the spelling and review how any Ys were classified.

How is Soul Urge different from Personality and Expression?

Soul Urge uses vowels for inner motivations. The Personality calculator uses consonants for outward impressions, while the Expression calculator uses every letter for talents and abilities.
